<br />Pittsburg-Midway Coal Company has obtained coal permits on public land
<br />northwest of Gallup, New Mexico, and is prospecting this land in conjunction
<br />with la.nd held in fee by the Santa Fe Railroad Company, The objective is
<br />sufficient coal for a future power and pyrochemical plant,
<br />
<br />The first two shafts to develop uranium ore on allotted Indian lands
<br />near Grants, New Mexico, have been started by the Lance Corporation,
<br />
<br />Experiments for the economic recovery of salt by solution mining and
<br />solar evaporation have been conducted by Goldfield Consolidated Mines, Inc"
<br />in the Detrital Wash area south of Lake Mead in Arizona,
<br />
<br />Geologic and mineral resource surveys and mapping

<br />More than 100 projects were active in the Pacific Southwest Region
<br />during the report period, Most of these are investigating mineral and
<br />mineral-fuel resources or are seeking data fundamental to land develop-
<br />ment and engineering construction, The following reports were published.

<br />of residual soils in the district may serve as a guide
<br />to near-surface ore not yet discovered.

<br />"Geology of Majuba Hill, Pershing County, Nevada", by
<br />A. F. Trites and R. H, Thurston, Bulletin 1046-1. Small
<br />tin, copper, and urani.um deposits occur on faults which
<br />cut a complex plug of intrusive rhyolitic rocks of
<br />TArtiary (?) age. The Majuba mine, prior to 1949, had
<br />yielded 27,000 tons of copper ore and 350 tons of tin ore,
