<br />UNITED STA'l'ES <br />DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR <br />GEOLOGICAL SURVEY <br /> <br /> <br />OG3fi:iS <br /> <br />. . <br /> <br />SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES IN THE PACIFIC SOUTHWEST <br />JANUARY - JUNE 1959 <br /> <br />Claesification of lands and eupervision of leases <br /> <br />Water and Power.- In preparation for publication is a topographic <br />strip map of the Navajo River and certain tributaries, from its junction <br />with the San Juan River in Colorado to the mouth of Iron Creek near its <br />headquarters. Larger scale maps of four damsites on the main stream are <br />included. <br /> <br />Topographic surveys of four damsites on the Crystal River, a tribu- <br />tary of the Roaring Fork at Carbondale, Colorado, were started in June. <br /> <br />Mineral Classification.- A subsu~face study of the potash deposits <br />and associated evaporites in the Paradox Basin, Utah and Colorado, has <br />been started. <br /> <br />For administrative use, structure-contour maps of the Big Piney- <br />La Barge gas field of western Wyoming, and of the Paradox Basin oil fields <br />are being prepared. <br /> <br />For publication as part of a nation-wide map, and for separate pub- <br />lication at larger scale, compilation has progressed on a map showing <br />the configuration and distribution of basement rocks and depths of <br />sedimentary basins in California. <br /> <br />Oil and Gas Leasing.- A report, was furnished to the Eleventh Naval <br />District, San Diego, California, on oil and gas activity in the vicinity <br />of the Naval Construction Battalion Center, Port Hueneme. At issue is: <br />should authority be transferred to the Department of the Interior to issue <br />oil and gas leases on the Center. <br /> <br />The Naval District also was furnished a mineral appraisal covering <br />five parcels of land adjacent to the Naval Missile Center, Point Mugu, <br />California. <br /> <br />A report was furnished the Public Housing Administration to assist <br />in deciding whether to grant a drill site in leasing certain housing- <br />project lands for oil and gas, <br /> <br />Of general interest is the unitization and future water-flood of the <br />Wilmington Field, California. The water-flood operation will be among <br />the largest in the world, and will involve injecting more than one billion <br />
