New Reservoirs

The proposed Animas-La Plata Project would pump water
from the Animas River at a point just south of Durango into
Ridges Basin Reservoir which would be located just south of
Smelter Mountain. The reservoir would store high-stream-
flow waters of the Animas which would be used to irrigate
farmlands, insure flows downstream to New Mexico, provide
storage for Durango and its water service area, and provide
both agricultural and municipal and industrial water for the
Ute tribes.

La Plata County's western agricultural community would get
supplemental water for land now receiving inadequate irriga.
tion as well as a full water supply for the so-called Dry Side.
The Ute Reservoir, located oH the La Plata River on the New
Mexico state line, would store water for the development of
the natural resources on the Southern Ute Reservation as
well as for irrigation of farmlands in New Mexico,

Both reservoirs would have recreation facilities, Fishing,
water skiing, boating, and picnicking facilities would be
provided at both sites and land immediately surrounding the
reservoirs will remain public and open to all. Because of the
difference in elevation, the two reservoirs would complement
each other instead of duplicating facilities.
