It will provide water for three Indian tribes (Ute Mountain, Southern Ute, and Navajo), two states (Colorado and New Mexico), improve the economy of the two counties of La Plata and Montezuma, and assure municipal water for five towns (Durango, Aztec, Bloomfield, Farmington and Shiprock). It will provide water for agriculture, for all types of water-based recreation, for domestic use both in towns and in rural areas, and for any industrial uses which may develop, such as coal mining, coal-fired power plants, coal gasification, and coal liquefaction. All this will be done with a minimum of damage to the environment. The Animas-La Plata Project will leave the Animas River a free-flowing stream from its headwaters high in the San Juan Mountains all the way to the pumping plant just south of Durango, with minimal damage to recreation from that point on down. . ~.~ . - ''''V:'',,- ..,. . ~. c~.;. ,r-
