Public Water Dema~

The Tulsa District Corps of Engineers. through the services of
the Southwestern Division Corps of Engineers, conducted field
surveys in August 1984 to collect data on municipal and indus-
trial water supply systems in the Southeastern portion of Kansaso
This effort represented the first phase of a study that was to
comprise all Kansas counties within the jurisdiction of the
Tulsa Districto The basins included in the study are the
Cimarron, Lower Arkansas, Neosho, Upper Arkansas, Verdigris and
the Walnut river basinso

The Kansas Water Office began to develop Electric Power Genera-
tion, Industrial, Mining and Public Water Use surveys in the fall
of 1984 and planned a comprehensive statewide efforto Upon
learning of the two independent studies; the Kansas Water Office
and the Tulsa District Corps of Engineers began working
cooperatively to ensure that survey respondents would not be
contacted by both the Kansas Water Office and the Southwestern
Division Corps of Engineerso Plans were also made to share the
data that were being collected and to decide upon a common
methodology to project pUblic water useo

It should be emphasized that all industrial water use estimates
were removed from the public water use estimates; hence. the 1984
Kansas pUblic water use estimates consist of rural domestic,
urban domestic and commercial water useo

Although most of the public water use data collected by the
Southwestern Division corps of Engineers represented calendar
year 1983 data, the Kansas pUblic water use estimates are shown
as 1984 calendar use estimates because:

1) 1984 data were used for all counties surveyed by the
Kansas Water Office.
2) 1983 public water use figures may be considered as
estimates for 1984,
3) 1984 U.So Census Bureau county population estimates were
used and
4) 1984 municipally-supplied industrial water use estimates
were subtracted from all pUblic water use estimates

Data Collection Procedures (Corps of Engineers)

The Southwestern Division Corps of Engineers conducted field
surveys during the period from August. 1984 to March, 1986 for
the pUblic water supply studyo The 55 counties included in this
study were Allen, Barber, Barton, Bourbon, Butler, Chase,
Chautauqua, Cherokee.
