I

I
r
I

f

~
I

. - r )
4 \J ~,~ ~..

eNGINEERING

,1

Electrolysis surveys and cathodic protection

No major electrolysis surveys of the District pipe lines were
made during the year, The Southern California Gas Company
installed a cathodic station at Olympic Boulevard and Evergreen
Avenue to protect its 16-inch main in Olympic Boulevard. The
location of the station is two blocks east of the District Palos
Verdes feeder in Orme Street but lateral gas lines pass directly
over the feeder, A test was made on May 23, 1946 to note any
tendency of the District feeder to pick up current from the station,
There \Vas no current flow in the District pipe either before or
after the cathodic station was put in operation, indicating that the
Type B enamel and gunite coating is still 100 per cent effective
in keeping out all stray and galvanic currents. As a result of the
test it was concluded that the District pipe would not be affected
by operation of the proposed cathodic station on the gas' mains,
and that drainage to the station would not be necessary,

A.dditions to distrib"tio" s!I"tem plnnt

The increasing service reqlliremenb~ necessitated design of sev-
eral system extensions and additional operation features, Plans
were prepared and equipment procured for two supplementary
servic.e connections, one for the City of Long Beach delivering
water into a new main constructed by the city southerly from
223rd Street near Delta A venue, the other for service to industrial
facilities south of 190th Street in the City of Torrance. Plans
prepared by the City of Pasadena Water Department were re-
viewed for a connection to the District's upper feeder at Sierra
Madrc_ Villa Ayenue.3j)l: future service.to an area ,in-tbe-easterly.
part of the city. These three service connections, together with
two others for which plans had been prepared previously, were
installed during the year.
Designs were prepared for a device to dissipate the energy in
the discharge from the ] 6.inch sleeve type regulating valve in-
stalled during August 1945 at the north portal of the Hollywood
tunnel. The valve delivers flows up to 30 c.f,s. into a forebay at
the grade tunnel entrance from a maximum upstream pressure of
70 pounds per square inch, and the resulting jet created a stand-
. ing wave in the tunnel which interfered with the operation of the
level control pilot valve. Following hydraulic tests on several
models built to a linear scale of 1 :4, a full size assembly was fab-
ricated and installed. The energy absorber discharges the flow
