,

f

~~:Q

OPERATION ANIl MAINTENANCE

39

of growth8 was avoided and general treatment of a reservoir was
at no time required. Approximately 17 tons of copper sulfate were
used for maintenance of all reservoirs during the fiscal year, .This
quantity i8 avpreciably under the usual dosage applied by m08t
cities with open storage reservoirs.
The results of bacteriological examinations of Colorado River
water are given in table 10, From all the samples collected for
sanitary control, a total of 18,150 tubes of the 10 ml. size was
planted. Of the 1820 tubes planted from natural Colorado River
water samples, 224 showed positive in the presumptive test, but
only 68 confirmed in the completed test for organisms of the coli-
aerogenes group. Similarly only one positive completed test was
obtained from the 1820 tubes planted from the 80ftened water
samples, The 14 confirmed positives obtained from the distribu-
tion system samples represented only 1/10 of one per cent of the
14,510 tubes planted, For comparison the U, S. Public Health
Service standards permit 10 per cent confirmed positives for an
acceptable water supply,

TABLE 6

ANALYSIS OF COLORADO RIVER WATER

A\-'erage for Year Ending June 30, 1946

CO.\'HITlJl:.:,"'IT

S\'MIIOL

::'ilit'iJ
IrOIl
Call\ium_ __n_._.
MagnesiulIl
SDdium and pOla~sium .
CarblHlilte
Bicarbonalf'
Sulfate.
Chluride . ..
Nilra.lc
BilTon
Fluorine

.............n..SiO~
. ............m.....Fe
......:....~:::~::..~::i1g
..,.......... ......,..,..Na&K
......m......... ....CO~
........,...,..............HCO,
,.......,...., ..........,.50.
....,....,..CI
,...,.................,NO,
......,.... ...., ...., ...... ,........,..B
..........1'

'1'010] disslIlved !;,uliJ., ...

Hardne!>s iJ:) CaCOJ
Toeal O..m"
Carbonate ....
Noncarbonal~

Frt'e carLon dioxide ........ ..... ..on_..
l-hdwgeu ion concentration .....
Specific electrical conductance.

.. ..CO,
,....pH
..uKxlO';;

COLORAIlU IlIVE:R WATER
N nURAL SOFTENED

7.1 p.p.lll. 7.5 p.r..m.
0.1 .. 0
89 29
~ -32- 13-
119 205
0 8
143 72
315 345
92 99
0,5 0,5
0,1 0.1
0,5 0.5
i57 744
353 126
ll7 73
236 53
I 0
8,2 B.9'
118 121
