r, /",. q
40J oJ._
~1 E T R 0 l' 0 LIT A N W ATE R D 1 S T R 1 C T

I

38

, started 'early in 1942 to determine the effect of the three kinds of
water upon tree yieldS and soil conditions. Four crops of oranges
have been harvested ~ince the beginning of the differential irriga-
tion treatment and t9 date the yields have been comparable for
all three sections of the grove, The rate of moistnre penetration
toward the end of the irrigation season is reduced more for the
soil irrigated with softened Colorado River water than for the soil
irrigated with the other waters, but the fall application of organic
matter and the winter rains continue to restore the soil to its
original state with respect to moisture movement. Observations
of plant and soil conditions will be continued.
Special ,.uggestions were offered to answer individual problems
of commercial and ptivate growers of plants in 27 personal inter-
views, In connection with these "peeial problems of growers and
for the interpretation of the results of controlled experiments in
the field and greenhouse, 245 samples of soil and plant tissue were
analyzed.

Quality of C%/'ado Rive/' '/Vater

An average analysis of Colorado River water as received at and
delivered from the softening and filtration plant during the fiscal
year 1945-46 is given in table 6, The continued drop in the sulfate
content and total hardne" of the natural water is a favorable
trend. The quality of the natural water by months is given in
table 7 and the Quality of the softened waler by months in table 8.
Data on the operation of the zeolite softeners are given in table 9.
The effect of the lower zeolite etJiciency is indicated by the increase
in the quantity of salt required per part of hardness removed, the
average for 1945-46 being 12 per cent higher lhan for 1944-45,
During the year the chemical control of the quality of water
maintained throughout the softening process required the partial
analysis of approximately 11,000 samples taken at various slages
in the process. In addition 1456 water samples were taken at
the plant for bacteriological examination. From points in the dis-
tribution system 1127 samples were taken for chemical analysis
and 2902 samples were collected for sanitary control. In the course
of the observation and conlrol of plankton growths in the various
District reservoirs 1237 samples were examined microscopically.
The practice was continued of ~vot-trf:atii1g \-vith copper sulfate
any point in a reservoir where organisms appeared in significant
numbers, with the result t.hat widespread and serious distribution

I
I

~
