1048

INDIVIDUALLY-OWNED WELLS

Individually-owned wells provide an important supplement to the water
supply for irrigation of lands under the Oxford Farmers Ditch. These wells are
pumped at the convenience of the owner. The shareholder-owned well may be used
either when no ditch water is available or in addition to the ditch water; how-
ever, it is seldom used when the Company is diverting 50 cfs or more. The well
owner with no surface rights uses his wells whenever he feels irrigation is bene-
ficial. April, August and September are usually the months of heaviest pumping.

Table 3 shows the pertinent data for the 77 irrigation wells in the
study area. Of these, 73 are used to irrigate lands within the Oxford Farmers
system and have a combined yield of 49.7 cfs. Four wells in the tabulation
are used primarily to irrigate lands outside of the Oxford Farmers System.
Three of the four are owned by farmers who have shares in the Oxford Farmers
Ditch Company to irrigate other lands within the system. These wells can be,
but seldom are, used to irrigated lands within the system. The yields of these
wells are 1075, 810 and 385 gpm, and the largest two have the two highest yields
of individually-owned wells in the study area. The fourth well is used entirely
to irrigate lands outside the system.

The system used in Table 3 to give the locations of the wells is basi-
cally the same as that used by the U.S. Geological Survey in the Basic Data
Releases. In the area of this study only the township, range and section is of
particular concern. The first number is township south of the base line, the
second number is the range west of the sixth principal meridian and the third
number is the section. The letters following the section number indicate the
location within the section. The first letter denotes the quarter section; the
second, the quarter-quarter-section and the third, the quarter-quarter-quarter-
section. The letters are assigned to the quarters in a counter-clockwise di-
rection, beginning with "a" in the northeast quarter. When two or more wells
are located within the same quarter-quarter-quarter section, consecutive numbers,
beginning with I, were assigned to each by the U.S.G.S. in the order they were
inventoried. For example, 22-59-18bcc2 indicates a well located the SW~SW~NW~
Sec. 18, T22S, R59W, and the 2 following the letters indicates that it was the
second well inventoried in the quarter-quarter-quarter-section.

Yields of all wells are, in general, less than the ownerS thought.
They range from less than 100 gpm to more than 1000 gpm and average 316 gpm.
The percentage cumulative distribution is shown below.

Yield Percent
less than 1000 gpm 99
less than 500 gpm 90
less than 400 gpm 73
less than 300 gpm 55
less than 200 gpm 21
less than 100 gpm 4

The yields of the 73 individually-owned wells used to irrigate lands in the
Oxford Farmers System range from 800 gpm to less than 100 gpm and average 306
gpm.
