~

Trade Sectors - The trade sectors of the UCRB Optimization Model are:

Wholesale Trade. Service Stations and All Other Retail Trade.

Like the

manufacturing sectors. the final demands fo" the t"ade sectors were estimated

from interpolation between "new" 1970 and 1980 final demand estimates and
o
published 197i"'and 1980 final demand estimates. Also. as in the manufacturing

ac tivi ties. the later al ternative was chosen when the two approaches yie 1ded

very different results.

Utilities - The utilities sectors are: Local Electricity Production and

Distribution. Coal-Fired Steam Electric Production for Export and All Other

Utilities.

The Local Electricity Production and Distribution sector includes

all production and distribution of electricity for local use.

As such, it

includes several types of electric production technologies (including oil and

gas-fired steam turbines). purchases from the hydroelectric facilities of the

federal government. and the distribution of electricity to the Basin's

e 1ec tric ity consumers.

This sector and the All Other Utilities sector are

regarded in this report as "driven" by the electric and utility require"lents

of the Basin.

As such. final demands. as estimated by interpolation from

model generated final demands. were relatively small.

The other utility sector. Coal-Fired Steam Electric Production for

Export, is a relative newcomer to the regional economies. This sector is made

up of large coal-fired facilities. financed primarily by utilities from

outside the region and producing the vast bulk of its electricity for export.

The final demand for this sector is also the !GO of the sector. and both were

estimated for 1975 from a Federal Power Commission (FPC) report on capacity

and output by plant.
