o
Ut
W
""

@

goods and services which had previously been exported may also grow. The

rapid general growth may turn a region from a net exporter of a product into a

net importer.

This is what the model suggests has happened with respect to

Dairy products in the San Juan Region when it generates a negative final

demand.

The iGO and FD of the forestry sector for 1975 were estimated by

interpolation as described above.

The output of this sector is apparently

quite volatile in that it depends to a large extent on the age distribution of

timber stock and federal cutting policies.

Mining and Minerals - For the most part the Conventional Oil, Natu"al ./

Gas and Related Services; All Other Mining; and Uranium Mining and Processing

sectors had their reos and FDs estimated by the general method described

above.

These industries are all "maturell in the sense that the major known

economic resources have been exploited. They were, as a consequence, treated

as having followed the stable output path projected for them in the earlier

studies.

Special mention, however, should be made regarding the Uranium Mining

and Processing sector. This sector is "double countedll in the sense that the

output from the mines is "re-counted" as output from the mills and the total
IJ\.'I:w;,.,~
output of the sector is^inF"'~'/bY that amount. In effect, two sectors are

treated as one because of the fact that mining and milling are often tlosely

integrated.

Furthermore, a rapid price rise characterizes the final demand

and total gross output of this sector in 1978 dollars.

These figures are

grossly inflated by virtue of the fact that the UCR>> products are sold under

cont"act at much lower average prices than the 1978 spot price of yellowcake.
