<br />l\) <br />~ <br />to <br />0) <br /> <br />Agricultural Research Service- A detailed discussion of <br />the activities of the ARS are provided in the 1984 USDA <br />Annuual Report-Colorado River Salinity Control program. <br />A drainwater reuse project in the Imperial valley, <br /> <br />California involving the use of saline drainwater as a <br /> <br />partial source of irrigation water at different stages of <br />crop growth is continuing. preliminary results have shown <br /> <br />that under selected conditions, the substitution of 50 to 75 <br />percent drainwater (3,000 mg/l) for irrigation on cotton, <br /> <br />sugar beets, and wheat shows little or no reduction in crop <br /> <br />yields. <br /> <br />In Grand Valley, Colorado studies are underway using <br />stable isotopes to determine the relative quantities of local <br /> <br />ground water originating from Colorado River water, as <br /> <br />opposed to that coming from precipitation, and lateral ground <br /> <br />water inflow from nonirrigated areas. <br /> <br />preliminary results <br /> <br />indicate about 1/3 of the ground water comes from other than <br /> <br />Colorado River origin. <br />Cooperative State Research Service-State Agricultural <br />Experiment stations - Utah State University in cooperation <br />with Utah Power and Light have been investigating the use of <br />wastewater from the coal-fired powerplant at Huntington, utah <br /> <br />for the production of crops. Crops have been grown for 8 <br />years and soil salinity has been monitored. Wastewater was <br />applied by specialized line-source equipment at rates ranging <br />from excess, which caused leaching, to no leaching. The <br /> <br />-20- <br />
