'J

REPORT ON
CHATFIELD PROJECT
lUR
BOARD OF WATER COMMISSIONERS
CITY AND COUNTY OF DENVER
DENVER, COLORADO

INTRODUCTION

A. Purpose

Floods on the South Platte River in the Denver area were studied

and reported on many years ago by the U.S. Ar~ Corps of Engineers. A

key feature of the flood control plan proposed by the Corps was the

Chatfield Dam and Reservoir to be located Just downstream of the con-

fluence of the South Platte River and Plum Creek. After review, the

Congress authorized the Chatfield Project but did not appropriate fUnds

for construction. The Project lay dormant until the large flood on the

"

South Platte River occurred in June 1965. After the flood, the Project

became very much alive. The affected governmental entities and organ-

ized groups exerted public pressure through their representatives for

flood protection with the result that Congress in 1966 appropriated

funds for initial construction work on the Chatfield Project. The Corps

of Engineers are presently preparing detailed design plans and are pre-

paring to buy the land necessary for the dam construction.

The Denver Water Board has facilities that will be affected by the

initial construction work of the Project. Action to accommodate the

Board in relocation of their affected facilities and compensation for

facilities lost has been initiated by the Corps so that an agreement can

be reached that will not hinder the construction work.

- 1 -
