I. POPULATION

To operate a growing water utility efficiently, it is essential that

future projections of population and water demands be reviewed frequently.

This section reviews the latest information on population that may be

served by the Denver Water Board. In turn, this projected growth in

population and resulting water demands will control the required treat-

ment and supply facilities and the scheduling of those facilities. The

scheduling of the facilities is important in selection of the proper

course of action that the Board may wish to take to repair or replace the

damage caused by the construction of the Chatfield Project.

Historically, Metropolitan Denver has experienced a rapid rate of

population growth which, until 1940, closely paralleled that of the

State of Colorado. Since then, the Denver Metropolitan Area has grown at

a faster rate than either Colorado or the United States. Present indi-

cations are for this trend to continue in the future with the state and

metropolitan rate being much closer than in the past.

The large growth since 1940 has resulted from the emergence of Colo-

rado, and specifically the Denver Metropolitan Area, a8 a significant

scientific complex. The continually growing number of research and de-

velopment establishments attest to this fact.

Since any large metropolitan area experiencing a rapid growth rate

requires large capital expenditures to provide needed services and facili-

ties, it is necessary to continually review and update this growth rate.

This has been and is being done for the Denver Metropolitan Area by the

Inter-County Regional Planning Commis8ion (ICRFC) and the Denver Planning

Office.
