.

.

.

~Oi~

PART VII--PROJECT LANDS

A semidetailed land classification survey using mlnlmum
requirements for a fully developed area was made on approximately
299,425 acres in the Narrows Unit service area between February 1954
and July 1956. The survey indicated that the physical properties
of the irrigable land are favorable for sustained irrigation and
that the full yielding potential of the irrigable lands has not been
attained under existing water supply conditions.

LAND CLASSIFICATION

The lands were classified on the basis of their potential pro-
ductivity and the estimated costs of development, taking into account
the composite effects of soil topography, and drainage. In estimating
the development costs, allowances were made for grading and structures
necessary to facilitate spreading water efficiently and the installa-
tions required to provide farm drainage. After determining the pro-
ductivity ratings and development costs, the lands were assigned to
classes on the basis of standards which were developed specifically
for the Narrows Unit by the Bureau of Reclamation. The results of
the land classification are summarized in table ll. Exhibit 7 shows
the location of the lands by classes.

Table ll.--Land classification

(acres and use as of 1956)
Intermittently
Class Irrigated irrigated Total
or dryland
1 Irrigable 62,830 l,325 64,l55
2 Irrigable 56,980 lO,415 67,395
3 Irrigable 24,095 lO,725 34,820
Total irrigable 143,905 22,465 166,370
6w Nonirrigable 27,185 0 27,185
Subtotal 171,090 22,465 193,555
6 Nonirrigable 0 105 ,870 l05,870
Total 171,090 128,335 299,425

49
