<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />w <br />C"": <br /> <br />The Narrows Unit will enable Colorado to capture and <br /> <br />c <br /> <br />beneficially use a ?ortion of the remaining waters to which it is <br /> <br />entitled. <br /> <br />Thus, the project will protect and develop the state's water <br /> <br />resources, protect and preserve the public health, safety, and <br /> <br />welfare, and improve the economic well-being of Coloradans. <br /> <br />Status of Unit <br /> <br />The Lower South Platte and Central Colorado Water <br /> <br />Conservancy Districts were organized in 1964 and 1965, respec- <br /> <br />tive1y, to serve as sponsoring, contracting, and operating <br /> <br />entities for the Narrows Unit. Repayment contracts were signed <br /> <br />by the Lower South Platte Water Conservancy District and the <br /> <br />Central Colorado Water Conservancy District in July, 1976. A <br /> <br />contract was executed in August, 1976, with the State for <br /> <br />repayment of reimbursable costs under provisions of Public Law <br /> <br />89-72 . <br /> <br />Funds to initiate preconstruct ion activities on the Unit <br /> <br />were first appropriated in 1972 and continued until 1975. <br /> <br />Construction funds were appropriated in 1976 and land acquisition <br /> <br />was initiated that year. Additional construction funds were <br /> <br />recommended by the Ford Administration for 1977, but were <br /> <br />subsequently denied by the Carter Administration. <br /> <br />-4- <br />
