SECTION IV - EXISTING AND AUTHORIZED lllPROVEMENTS

.

10. CORPS OF ENGINEERS PROJECTS

a. Harlan County Dam. Harlan County Dam and Reservoir on the
Republican River in south-central Nebraska has a flood control
allocation of 500,000 acre-feet and an irrigation, conservation and
sediment reserve pool of 350,000 acre-feet. The dam controls the
runoff from an area of 9,277 square miles below the Trenton, Enders~
Red Willow, and Medicine Creek Dams of the Bureau of Reclamation.
At full conservation pool, Harlan County Reservoir has a surface
area of 13,600 acres. Visitor-day attendance has averaged one-third
million annually during the past 5 years. The filling of the con-
servation pool was started in November 1952 but, because of the small
inflows during the drought period, full conservation pool storage
was not obtained until June 1957, when the first floodwaters were
impounded. The reservoir provides irrigation water for the upper
end of the Bostwick Irrigation Division of the Bureau of Reclamation.

b. Milford Dam. Milford Dam and Reservoir on the lower
Republican River is under construction. The damsite is 8.3 miles
above the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill Rivers. The
dam will control the runoff from 3,796 square miles below the Harlan
County and Lovewell Dams. The reservoir will have a sediment reserve
of 160,000 acre-feet, a water conservation storage pool of 300,000
acre-feet, and a flood-control allocation of 700,000 acre-feet. At
full conservation pool elevation the lake will have an area of
14,500 acres.

~. Pioneer Dam. The authorized Pioneer Dam and-Reservoir
project on the Arikaree River, in the vicinity of the Kansas-Colorado
State line, was approved in the Flood Control Act of 1944 and author-
ized in the Flood Control Act of 1946. The project has been placed
in deferred status because of economic considerations.

~. Indianola, Nebraska. A local protection project, consisting
of levee construction and channel improvements along Coon Creek at
Indianola, Nebraska, was completed in July 1949.

~. Bartley. Nebraska. A local protection project, consisting
of levees and channel improvements along Dry Creek at Bartley,
Nebraska, was completed in March 1952.

!. Clyde, Kansas. A small flood control project is under
construction at Clyde, Kansas. The project will provide levees and
channel improvements along Elk Creek.

~. Emergency work. Revetments along the left bank of the
Republican River at McCook, Nebraska, were constructed under the
provisions for emergency work to protect the municipal water supply
line and water wells of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad.

.

14
