000017

",

COLORADO-BIG THOMPSON PROJECT (1)

The Colorado-Big Thompson Project will provide a supplemental
water supply to approximately 615,000 acres of land now under culti-
vation and will develop electrical energy for resale to consumers
and distributing agoncies in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. The
combined generating capacity will be approximately 176,000 kilowatts.

The key feature of the preject is the Alva B. Adams Tunnel
which pierces the backbone of the Rocky Mountains for a distance of
13.1 miles between Grand Lake, Colorado, and Estes Park. It is
through this tunnel that stored water from the western slope water-
ahed will bo diverted to the eastern slope for irrigation and power
purposes.

The largest reservoir on the project, Granby Reservoir, is
located on the western slope of the Colorado River and will store ex-
cess runoff, which will later be pUlllped through Granby pumping plant
into Shad""" Nounta in Lake. From Shadow Mounta in Lake, the pumped
water, together with additional water flowing therein, will flow by
gravity through Grand Lake and thence into the Alva B. Adams Tunnel
and under the Continental Divide to the eastern slope.

"

Two lerge reservoire, namely, Horsetcoth Reservoir and Carter
Lake Reservoir, with a combined capacity of 256,000 acre-feet, will
be used for storage of water preparatory to release for irrigation
purposes. Water will be roleasod from these two reservoirs through
supply canals into the Pudre River, the Big Thompson River, St.
Vrain Creek, Boulder Creek, and the Platte River.

Green Hountain Reservoir is lGeated on the Blue River, a
tributary of the Colorado River on the western. slope. Water stOI'ed
in this reservoir will provido a continuous and uninterrupted flow
of water which might otherwise. have beep interferred with as a
result of the diversion process.

Power plants of the ~jeet will be interconnected with power
systems of the North Platte, Kendrick, Rivert~n, and Shoshone Proj-
ects in addition to n1llllCrous privately and publicly-owned systems.

The program for fiscal year 1948 for the entir~ Colorado-Big
Thompson Project is $19,200,782.

M:::jor features of this projeet are discussed in more detail on
subsequent pages.

27
