<br />ANGOSTURA UNIT (19) <br /> <br />Description: Angostura Unit is located on the Cheyenne River, <br />7 miles southeast of Hot Springs, South Dakota. The dam will be a con- <br />crete structure about 150 feet high and 960 feet long, with an earth .~ <br />dike 940 feet long on the right abutment. The reservoir capacity will <br />be 220,000 acre-feet for the irrigation of 16,180 acres. <br /> <br />Program FY48 ($3.309.000): Angostura Dam was under construction <br />at the start of the fiscal year (30 percent complete). The contractor <br />scheduled the dam to be 77 percent complete at the end of the fiscal <br />year. Designs and specifications were to be initiated for the main <br />canal. <br /> <br />Accomplishments FY48: By the end of fiscal year all foundation <br />excavation was completed for the. dam and 48.5 percent (135,824 yards) <br />of the total concrete placed. The contract for the dam was 63 percent <br />complete, with 71 percent of contract ttme elapsed. The sheet-piling <br />diversion wall failed on March 16, 1948 and was again over-topped by a <br />flash flood on June 18, causing considerable delay in construction <br />operations. Costs to June 30, 1948 were $2,800,634. <br /> <br />HEART RIVE~ UNIT (18) <br /> <br />Description: Heart River Unit, in southwest North Dakota, involves <br />construction of two reservoirs and a system of pumping plans and canals. <br />Irrigation will be provided for approximately 14,000 acres of dry land. <br />Heart Butte Dam will be an earthfill structure with a height of 124 feet <br />and a crest length of 1,850 feet. Reservoir storage will be 425,000 <br />acre-feet. Dickinson Dam will be an earthfill-t~~ with a height of <br />45 feet and a crest length of 1,600 feet. Reservoir storage. will be <br />16,500 acre-feet. <br /> <br />Program FY48 ($830.000): Construction of Heart Butte Dam and re- <br />location of State Highway No. 49 will be started. Invitations to bid <br />will be issued for the pumping plants. Construction of a Government <br />camp at Glen Ullin was to be started. Construction is to be started <br />on Dickinson Dam. <br /> <br />(.) --I <br /> <br />Accomplishments FY48: Notice to proceed on Heart Butte Dam was <br />acknowledged by the contractor on }~rch 22, 1948, and 15 percent of the <br />contract was completed at the end of the fiscal year. Building of the <br />access road was started and excavation for spillway dam, foundation, _ <br />and outlet works was underway. Three contracts were let for residences; ~ <br />sewerage and water system, and a laboratory for the Government camp at <br />Glen Ullin. Invitations to bid for Dickinson Dam were ready for issu- <br />ance but were withheld due to insufficient funds for normal construc- <br />tion during the entire year. Costs to June 30, 1948 were $868,399, <br />or $.38,399 in excess of the program. <br /> <br />16 <br />
