The rapid expansion of rural electrification for irrigation
pumping and domestic use in Montana has resulted in a very marked in-
crease in the demand for power. The Montana-Dakota Utilities Company
has experienced a shortage of power and contracted with the Bureau for
the purchase of Fort Peck electric energy. To serve this company and
other Bureau loads, including rural cooperatives and irrigation
pumping loads, reached over the company's facilities, a ll5-kv, 140-
mile transmission line was started in fiscal year 1945. This line and
its substation terminal at Glendive, Montana, were placed in operation
in December 1945. Construction has been started on a 115-kv, 139-mile
transmission line between Fort Peck and Williston, North Dakota, and a
ll5-Iev, 78-mile transmission line between Glendive and Miles City,
Montana .

41
