COLORADO...B IG THOMPSON PROJECT

The Colorado-Big Thompson Project Hill provide a supplemental
water supply to approximately 615,000 acres of land now under culti-
vation and will develop electrical energy for resale to consumers
and distributing agencies in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. The
combined ge~erating capacity will be approximately 176,000 kilowatts,

The key feature of the project is the Alva B. Adams Tunnel which
pierces the backbone of the Roc~ Mountains for a distance of 13.1
miles bet\.reen Grand Lake, Colorado, and Estes Park. It is through
this tunnel that stored water from the western slope watershed will
be diverted to the eastern slope for irrigation and power purposes.

The largest reservoir on the project, Granby Re~ervoir, is lo-
cated on the western slope of the Colorado River and will store 'ex-
cess runoff, which will later be pumped through Granby Pumping Plant
into Shadow l-1ountain Lake. From Shadow 110untain Lake, the pumped
water, together with additional water flowing into it, will flow by
gravi ty through Grand Lake and thence into the Alva B. Adams Tunnel
and Under the Continental Divide to the eastern slope.

Tvlo large reservoirs, namely, Horsetooth Reservoir and Carter
Lake Reservoir, with a combined capacity of 256,000 acre-feet, will
be used for storage of \Tater preparatory to release for irrigation
purposes. Water will be released from these two reservoirs through
supply canals into the Poudre RiveT, the Big Thompson, St. Vrain
Creek, Boulder Creek, and the Platte River,

Green Mountain Reservoir is located on the Blue River, a tr~b.!l-u,
tary of the Colorado River on the- westernslope-.--Wa:ters-t;oredU in
this reservoir \01111 provide a continuous and uninterrupted flow of
water \vhich might otherwise have been interfered Hi th as a result of
the diversion process.

Power plants of the project will be interconnected with power
systems of the North Platte, Kendrick, Riverton, and Shoshone Projects
in addition to numerous privately and publicly-owned systems.

The total cost of the project is estimated at'$144,581,OOO and
the program for fiscal year 1949 was ~23,995, 706. '

Major features of this project are discussed in more detail on
subsequent paees,

32.
