oarl,'!':')
(II) .'

KORTES UNIT

Description: Kortes Dam and Power Plant on the North Platte
River, will provide increased power production by t~{ing advantage
of all feasible differences in head between the Seminoe Reservoir
and the Pathfinder Reservoir. The dam will be a concrete gravity
structure 230 feet above the foundation and having a crest length
of 440 feet. The spillway will have a capacity of 50,000 second-
feet. The reservoir created will have a capacity of 5,000 acre-
feet and flood an area of about 100 acres. The power plant will
have a generating capacity of 36,000 kilowatts. A 1l5,000-volt
power line will be constructed from Seminoe to Kortes power plant
and will continue north to Casper, and thence east to Guernsey,
Wyomin/::; Gering, Nebraska; and Sidney, Nebraska, where it will con-
nect w1th the proposed li5,00o-volt system of the Colorado-Big Thompson
Project.

Construction of Kortes Dam and Power Plant started Hay 25, 1911>
with the award of the prime contract to Harrison-Knudsen Com?8nY for
$4,688,000. The value of this contract has now been revised to
$6,570,902. The difficulty and increased quantity of scaling opera-
tions, to[;8ther with material shortages, labor troubles, and adverse
weather conditions have all contributed to the delay in completing
this dem.

The total cost of Kortes Unit is estimated at $11,781,000. The
total cost to June 30, 1949 was ~p9i349,9?4. Of the $3,641,231 ex-
pended during fiscal year 1949, $2,533,016 or 70 percent was in the
form of p~ents to the contractors.

The following is a brief comparison of the fiscal year 1949 pro-
gram vg. accomplishments. A graphic representation of the work pe~
formed during the year is shown on the opposite ~age.

Prol!Tam FYL.9

Funds available - $5,018,880.

Permanent improvements; includ-
ing housing, roads and utilities
lrere scheduled for completion.

Construction of Kortes Dam was
48 percent complete at the start
of the year and \{as scheduled
to be 63 percent complete at the
end.

Accomplishments FY49

Costs to June 30, 1949 - $3,641,231.

All residences and other improve-
ments at the government camp
were completed.

The dam and power plant contract
was 61.4 percent complete with
84.9 percent of the time elapsed.

27
