BOYSEN UNIT

Description: Boysen Unit consists of a dam, reservoir, and power
plant on the Big Horn River 16 miles south of Thermopolis, Wyoming.
The dam when completed will be an earthfill type approximately 150
feet high with a crest length of approximately 1,100 feet. The res-
ervoir will have a capacity of 1,493,000 acre-feet. A 15,000 kva
power plant will be constructed as an integral part of the dam. The
reservoir capacity will provide 260,000 acre-feet reserved for silt
storage, 673,000 acre-feet of super storage for flood control and
560,000 acre-feet for irrigation and power development.

Boysen Dam and Reservoir is a key structure providing for re-
regulating the stream to compensate for the several proposed upstream
and downstream irrigation developments. The power plant at Boysen
is strategically located in the center of a 300-mile transmission net-
work between Shoshone Power Plant and the Seminoe Power Plant near
Casper.

Construction of Boysen Reservoir necessitates the relocation of
13.4 miles of the C. B. & Q Railroad, a section of the C&NW Railroad,
and also a portion of U~ S. Highway No. 20. The relocation of the
highway was completed November 25, 1947 on a contract awarded on
August 29, 1947 for construction of the dam, power plant and reloca-
tion of the railroad. This contract was awarded to Morrison-Knudsen
for $13,899,999.

The total cost of Boysen Unit is estimated at $29,726,000, The
total cost to June 30, 1949 was $16,298,555. Of the $8,633,346 ex-
pended during fiscal year 1949, $7,118,732, or 82 percent, was in the
form of p~ents to contractors,

The following is a brief comparison of the fiscal year 1949 pro-
gram vs. accomplishments.
