<br />HEART RIVER UN IT <br /> <br />Description: Heart River Unit, located in southwest North Dakota, <br />involves construction of two reservoirs and a system of pumping plants <br />and canals. <br /> <br />Heart Butte Reservoir, about 60 miles above the mouth of the <br />Heart River at Bismarck and Mandan,will store water for irrigation <br />of 13,100 acres of land. The dam will be an earthfill structure 124 <br />feet above stream bed. The reservoir will have a total storage capac- <br />ity of 428,000 acre-feet of which 6,800 acre-feet are for silt storage, <br />63,200 acre-feet for irrigation and 358,000 acre-feet are for flood <br />control. <br /> <br />Irrigation of the lands below Heart Butte Dam will be accomplished <br />by means of 49 small pumping plants. <br /> <br />Dickinson Reservoir will provide water for municipal use and for <br />irrigation of 915 acres of land. It will have a total storage capac- <br />ity of 16,500 acre-feet including 3,000 acre-feet for silt, 4,000 acre- <br />feet for irrigation and municipal water and 9,500 acre-feet for flood <br />control. The dam will be an earthfill structure 45 feet high. <br /> <br />.) <br /> <br />The entire Heart River Unit is estimated to cost $7,645,000. <br />The contract for Heart Butte Dam was awarded to C. F. Lytle & Green <br />Construction Company December 3, 1947 for $2,360,743. <br /> <br />As of June 30, 1949 a total of $3,257,101 had been spent on Heart <br />River Unit. Of the $1,666,696 spent during fiscal year 1949, $1,338,361 <br />or 80 percent was in the form" of contractor1s earnings. <br /> <br />The following is a brief comparison of the fiscal year 1949 pro- <br />gram vs. accomplishments. A graphic portrayal of progress during the <br />year is shown on the opposite page. <br /> <br />ProRram FY49 <br /> <br />Funds available - ~p2,477,283. <br /> <br />Construction of Heart Butte <br />Dam was to be 70 percent com- <br />plete on June 30, 1949, accord- <br />ing to the contractor's sched- <br />ule. Clearing of the reservoir <br />ai te was to be completed. The <br />Government camp vIas to be com- <br />pleted. Construction of Dick- <br />inson Dam was scheduled to <br />start in March 1949. <br /> <br />Accomplishments FY49 <br /> <br />Costs to June 30, 1949 - $1,666,696. <br /> <br />Construction Heart Butte Dam <br />was 61 percent complete on June <br />30, 1949 i-lith 42 percent of con- <br />tract time elapsed. Contract <br />for clearing reservoir was awarded <br />April 20, 1949. The Government <br />camp was completed. A contract <br />was avlarded for Dickinson Dam <br />on December 15, 1948 and work <br />was 13 percent complete on June 30. <br /> <br />. ! <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />20 <br />
