O~1627

CORPS OF ENGINEERS - u.. S. ARMY
SOUTHWESTERN DIVISION
DALIA;:;, TEXAS

OUTLINE OF PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINATION OF
ARKANSAS RIVER BASIN DRAINAGE AREAS

1. Establishment of watsrshed boundaries.

a. Available U.S.G.S. quadrangle sheets were used to locate boundaries.

b. County maps were used for areas not covered by quadrangle sheets.

c. Watershed boundary lines were traced on the quadrangle sheets as in-
dicated by contour elevations.

d. Watershed boundary lines were traced on the county maps midway be-
tween streame.

2 . Breakdown of Areas.

Watershede were determined, as indicated in par88=Pp. 1 above,
for the main stem on the Arkansas River, from source near
Leadville, Colorado, to lIIDllth at Mississippi River for lIBJor
and minor tributaries and their tributaries or eubareas and
for dam sites, gaging stations, etc.

3. Determination of Drainage Areas (Source to Fort Smith, Arkansas)

a. Quadrilaterals (basic areas) of 30 minutes latitude and longitude
were plotted on base I!Il.pS (scale = 1:500,000) of entire drainage
area under study. EaOh quadrilateral was numbered.

b. Drainage boundaries established as indicated in par&sraPh 2 above
were transferred to the base maps through the use of a pantograph;

c. Each basic area (30 minute quadrilateral) on the base I!Il.p was
pl.an:lmetered.

d. l'lan:lme1;ered that portion of drainage area in question that laJ
in a given basic area.

e. Determined the percent (to nearest l/lOOth of one percent) that
the area in question was of the basic area, (d/c).

f. Total number of square miles in basic area (as determined fram
Smithsonian Geographic Tables) was DDlltiplied by percentage de-
termined in e, above, to determine number square miles in that
drainage area in queetion.

.

A

..
