.

000173

.

A Water Resource Analyst from the Board is a member of the
U. S. Bureau of Reclamation's Western U. S. Water Plan Study
Team. This team is developing essential data pertaining to the
water resources of the state and coordinating proposed plans of
the several agencies in the state that are interested in water and
related land resources.

The Colorado Water Conservation Board and the U. S. Bureau
of Reclamation have allocated matching funds to the Natural
Resources Center, Colorado state University, for an "Economic
Analysis of Water Use in Colorado's Economy." The objectives of
the analysis are:

1. To determine the economic interrelationships among the
major sectors of Colorado's economy.

2.
mine the

To estimate future output of specific
impact of these output changes on all

sectors and deter-
sectors.

3. To delineate the economic importance of water resources
on major economic sectors.

4. To estimate the impact of future output levels on the
demand for water and to examine possibilities for substitution
between water and other factors in an optimizing framework.

Final publication of the analysis in F. Y. 1974 is expectd
to be of great value to Phase III of the State Water Plan.

Environmental and Water Quality Improvements

A strong effort is being made by the Colorado Water
Conservation Board in the Grand Valley area of the Colorado River
Basin to ameliorate the salinity effects on the Colorado River
system by investigating the dependent nature of river salinity
levels and irrigation scheduling and efficiency. A broad program
is being carried out on the Colorado Main Stem by the U. S. Bureau
of Reclamation; the effort of the Board's staff is an integral
part of this program.

The state recognizes that the international nature of the
colorado River salinity problem had its early beginnings in the
lower basin states when extremely marginal lands werf being
reclaimed in an arid environment.

Over the years, the Republic of Mexico has realized lower and
lower water quality levels in the water that is released to them

19
