Flood Plain Management Services. Flood damage prevention planning, at

all governmental levels, is the ultimate objective of the Flood Plain Manage-

ment Services Program. It takes place through provision of technical

services and other forms of assistance to persons and governmental entities

having to deal with problems of flood hazard. The purpose of this program is

to encourage and guide the best and safest use possible of flood plain lands.

Services available include help in interpretation and evaluation of basic

flood hazard data and guidance in preparation of flood plain regulations;

advice in use of basic data in actions regarding possible alternative develop-

ments in flood-prone areas; guidance on structural and nonstructural measures

which might be employed to reduce flood hazard; and in some cases, develop-

ment of basie flood hazard data. Although these services are primarily for

governmental agencies, private citizens or organizations may request an

evaluation of a site for flood hazards. The Corps is not permitted to

develop new data for private individuals; therefore, evaluation will be from

available data. These services are provided at no cost to the requester.

During 1980, we responded to 168 request for technieal services and flood

hazard evaluations of specific sites in the Rio Grande Basin. We also

prepared a special flood hazard information report for the Zia Pueblo in New

Mexico.

7
