Storage for flood control began

in early June and continued intermittently through June. Maximum flow at

Mogote was about 2,600 c.f.s. Unregulated peak would have occured on 9 June

with about 3,350 c.f.s.

6. Small Projects Program. Under the continuing authority of its Small

Projects Program, the Corps of Engineers is able to provide for the construc-

tion, repair, restoration, and modification of emergency streambank protec-

tion works to prevent damage to highways, bridge approaches, public works,

churches, hospitals, schools, and other non-profit public services. No more

than $250,000 of Federal funds can be spent for each project. In addition,

the Corps is able to build small flood control structures, such as levees,

floodwalls and dams if such projects are economically feasible. The Federal

project cost of these structures is limited to $2,000,000.

The Albuquerque District investigated six small projects that are located in

the Rio Grande Basin. The sites are at Alamosa in Colorado and at Abiquiu,

Santo Domingo, Belen, Rio Puerco, and Las Cruces in New Mexico. Abiquiu and

Rio Puerco are presently under construction, while the others are in the

planning stage.

This program is available to communities, flood control organizations, ditch

associations, and other governing entities. Entities having a need for this

program should contact the District Engineer, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,

P.O. Box 1580, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87103.

7. 404 Permits. In 1980, eleven Department of the Army permits were issued

for projects in the Rio Grande Basin.
