Archaeological Findings
Because the Windy Gap pipeline
delivers water through a federal
reclamation project. It was required
that on-Site archaeological examina-
tions be conducted along its route. In
September of 1981. as a grader was
scraping oN topsoil. several Indian
ruins dating back 4,000 toB,OOOyears
were uncovered at a SIte northeast of
Granby.
Construction was halted so that a
team of archaeologists could excavate
the sites which were later deemed
eligible for placement on the Na!lOnal
Register of Hlstonc Places.
Federal funding was unavailable for
research since these specifiC SItes
were located on private property. The
Subdistrict prOVided a tOla! of $370.000
for excavation and study of the finds
and $85.000 was solicited by the U.S_
government from private foundations.
On August 1, 1982, construction of
the pipeline resumed_ Field specimens
and notes from the dig were trans-
ported to the Western Cuttural
Resources Management Laboratory
In Boulderwhere they were analyzed.
An exhibit and slide show of the
digging is on display at the Grand
County Museum.
