<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br /> <br />OC1785 <br /> <br /> <br />pENERAL DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT <br /> <br />Location <br /> <br />The project is located in Las Animas County, Colorado, <br />in the vicinity of Trinidad, a city of about 12,000 people. The <br />valley area directly affected by construction described in this <br />report extends along the l'urgatoire River from a point 5 miles <br />west of Trinidad to a point about 30 miles east and includes all <br />lands receiving irrigation water from the river and sUi'fering <br />flood damage. <br />Climate <br /> <br />The climate is smui-arid" the mean annual precipitation <br /> <br /> <br />being 16.6 inches, of which nearly 13 inches occurs from April to <br /> <br /> <br />October, as shown in Table 1. Rainfalls of the cloudburst type <br /> <br /> <br />visit the arGo. often, general rains being less frequent. The <br /> <br /> <br />mean annual temperature is 52 degrees. Temperatures range from <br /> <br /> <br />26 degrees below zero to 99 degrees above. ,The frost-free period <br /> <br /> <br />ranges from 130 to 194 days and averages about 163 days. <br /> <br /> <br />Land Classification and Soils <br /> <br /> <br />No land classification of the irrigable area has been <br /> <br /> <br />made. Irrigation has been practiced since 1846, and land under <br /> <br /> <br />existing systems has proven suitable. Between the dam and Trinidad, <br /> <br /> <br />.irrigated bottom landi! along the river total about 350 acres, upon <br /> <br /> <br />whtch field crops and considerable garden truck are produced.
