Included in the Board folder is a copy of the agenda. Prior to the meeting, on May 161h,
the Workgroup will be meeting to set a schedule for developing the 2002 Triennial Review Report.

Atlas Uranium Mill Tailings

On October 31,2000, President Clinton signed into law legislation authorizing the removal
of the 10.5 million tons of uranium tailings away from the Colorado River. The estimated cost of
cleanup is $300 million. The legislation provide no money but contained a pledge that the federal
government would pay to have the waste pile moved away from the river.

I have included in the Board folder a copy of a news article which describes activities at the
Moab site and the efforts of legislators to obtain appropriations to move the tailings away from the
river. The Bush administration has not included funding for this in its budget. Senator Bennett and
Congressman Canon have testified before various congressional appropriation committees requesting
$\ 0 million be placed in the budget to study how the pile can be relocated from the river.

,..

~r.:~~'_l>...~"'''.4-~

.--
Gerald R.
