These shops are respon- <br />sible for providing operation and maintenance services in <br />the area from Dodge City, Kansas to Albuquerque, New Mexico <br />and from Denver, Colorado to Boise City. Oklahoma; and for <br />diesel engine repair, air brake maintenance and car-building. <br /> <br />Public Service Company, Southern Colorado Power Company, <br />Rural Electric Associations, and municipal owned power- <br />plants provide electric power for the area. <br /> <br />The agricultural oriented industries in the Arkansas Valley <br />include: livestock raising and feeding, a sugar beet <br />processing plant at the City of Rocky Ford; a broom factory <br />and Walters Brewing Company at Pueblo; Western Canning <br />Company and the Western Food Products Company in La Junta; <br />several major meat packing plants of which the largest is <br />American Stores Packing Company of Pueblo; several alfalfa <br />dehydrating and milling companies located east of Pueblo; <br />and Holbrook Turkey Growers Association processing plant <br />at the City of Cheraw. <br /> <br />Federal and state government agencies also contribute to <br />the economic growth of the area. Major installations in- <br />clude Fort Carson Military Reservation. the Air Force <br />Academy, Pueblo Army Depot, Department of Transportation <br />Research and Test Center, Government Printing Office, <br />Colorado State Hospital, and Southern Colorado State <br />College. <br /> <br />Pueblo West is a McCulloch Properties Incorporated develop- <br />ment adjacent to the northern boundary of the Pueblo Reser- <br />voir area. McCulloch acquired nearly 32,000 acres for <br />developing an ultimate planned community for 60.000 people. <br />Subdivision, road construction, and sale of land began in <br />1969. There are a total of 10,781 lots plotted which range <br />in size from 60' x 110' to 5 acres. Over 232 miles of road <br />have been graded of which 5 miles have been paved. <br /> <br />A metropolitan improvement district has been formed and is <br />functioning to provide orderly development and funding of <br />water. sewer, fire and parks programs. There are 115 miles <br />of water line, 47 miles of powerline. 8 miles of gas line, <br />9 miles of sewer line and 13 miles of telephone cable in- <br />stalled. Construction is underway on a $450,000 sewage <br />treatment plant. The water filtration plant has been <br />completed. <br /> <br />35 <br />
