<br />Cortez Projects Office Building
<br />
<br />On the Bonneville Unit, Central Utah Proj-
<br />ect, awards were made on April 30, 1979,
<br />for Vat Diversion Dam and West Fork
<br />Pipeline, and on November 9, 1978, for
<br />Strawberry and Currant Creek Recreation
<br />Roads. Bids were opened in September
<br />1979 for recreation facilities at Soldier
<br />Creek and Aspen Grove Campgrounds.
<br />The Alpine Aqueduct Tunnel was holed
<br />through on December 20, 1978. In August
<br />1979, the contract was terminated on the
<br />Stillwater Tunnel due to geologic
<br />conditions.
<br />
<br />The Power Intake Modification contract
<br />was completed on the Flaming Gorge
<br />Unit, Utah. Operation of this new variable
<br />shutter system through the Flaming Gorge
<br />Dam is improving the downstream river
<br />fishery according to preliminary studies
<br />documenting fishery changes. This 3-year
<br />study will be completed in 1980.
<br />
<br />In July 1979, on the Dolores Project, Colo-
<br />rado, a contract was awarded for the Proj-
<br />ect Headquarters building in Cortez. The
<br />building will be solar-heated, the first solar
<br />energized installation in the Upper Colo-
<br />rado Region_

<br />West Fork Pipeline, Bonneville Unit
<br />
<br />A contract for the Historical Archaeologi-
<br />cal Program was awarded August 20, 1979,
<br />on the Dallas Creek Project, Colorado_
<br />Bids were opened in September 1979 for
<br />Ridgway Oam, Stage I.
<br />
<br />The State line Oam on the Lyman Project,
<br />Utah, was completed_ On August 3, 1979, a
<br />contract was awarded tor recreation
<br />facilities at Meeks Cabin and Stateline
<br />Reservoirs.
<br />
<br />Block & Drains contract was awarded on
<br />July 14, 1979, for the Emery County
<br />Project.
<br />
<br />On the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project,
<br />New Mexico, a contract was awarded in
<br />April 1979 for Block 2 Orains_ After a
<br />6-month delay, a contract was awarded in
<br />September 1979 for Block 5 Laterals_ This
<br />delay was due to land and rights differ-
<br />ences with the Navajo Tribe_
<br />
<br />Definite Plan Reports were completed for
<br />the Animas-La Plata Project, Colorado, and
<br />the Upalco Unit, Central Utah Project.

<br />East Side Road-Bonneville Unit
<br />
<br />Water releases from most reservoirs were
<br />high to handle the above normal spring
<br />run-off_ Water in Lake Powell, Glen Canyon
<br />Unit, Arizona-Utah, reached an all-time
<br />high elevation on July 21,1979_ This eleva-
<br />tion was 3,685 feet, which is 15 feet below
<br />the maximum water surface, and 10 feet
<br />higher than the previous all-time high in
<br />July 1975_
<br />
<br />For mitigation purposes, 5,437 acres of
<br />land were purchased during the year. To
<br />partially replace lands inundated by the
<br />Curecanti Unit Reservoirs, Colorado, and
<br />to provide fishermen access, 180 acres
<br />were purchased near Hotchkiss and 4,490
<br />acres were purchased near Cimarron; and
<br />to partially replace lands inundated by
<br />Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Utah, 787 acres
<br />were purchased near Little Hole.
<br />
<br />Recreation use of reservoirs set a new
<br />record, and a German Brown Trout was
<br />caught at Flaming Gorge Reservoir setting
<br />another world record.
<br />
<br />A salinity team was formed to monitor the
<br />hydrological conditions and water use
<br />within the Colorado River Basin, and to
<br />make recommendations for a control
<br />program.
