LAND USE AND REGIONAL SHARES OF PRODUCTION

To determine the location of the production of agricultural cOlllDod-
ities in the U.S., this NIRAP Model component relies upon four model sub-
components. The regional shares subcomponent determines the percentage of
national production within each of the states. The crop yield subcomponent
determines the yield per acre of the 23 agricultural crops commodities by
four different cropping practices--irrigated production, dryl and
producti on, conti nuous croppi ng, and summer fall ow cropping. The cropl and
avail abil ity subcomponent determines the total irrigated and non- irrigated
cropland available within each state. The land use subcomponent determines
the acreage pl anted to each cropping practice by commodity within each
state. The procedure for producing internally consistent projections is an
iterative technique in which each subcomponent is computed first independ-
ently to correct for inconsistencies within each respective subcomponent,
and then all four subcomponents are computed together and intra-component
inconsistencies are corrected.

II -48
