<br />L,", <br />.-4 <br />a') <br />N <br />w <br />o <br /> <br />Bureau of Reclamation <br /> <br /> <br />News Release <br /> <br />....... ....... <br />--"-fl/llla--"-fl/llla--"- <br />....... ...... ...... <br /> <br />Upper Colorado Region <br /> <br />Grand Junction Projects <br />Grand Junction CO <br />Ronald Johnston (303) 248-0618 <br />For Release August 18, 1992 <br /> <br />WILDLIFE LANOS ACQUIRED THROUGH COOPERATIVE EFFORT OF <br />BUREAU OF RECLAMATION AND COLORADO STATE PARKS <br /> <br />The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) and the Colorado State Parks have <br /> <br />acquired 192 acres of land along the Colorado River approximately 2 miles west <br /> <br />of 30 Road between Grand Junction and.Clifton. <br /> <br />The land, consisting of ponds, cottonwood stands, agricultural lands and <br /> <br />wetlands, will be managed by State Parks as part of the Colorado River state <br /> <br />Park. <br /> <br />The primary emphasis of the management will be on protection and <br /> <br />enhancement of riparian and wetland habitat along the Colorado River. In <br /> <br />addition, the Colorado Riverfront trail will traverse the land, and wildlife <br /> <br />observation and interpretation areas will be provided for the public. <br /> <br />It is <br /> <br />expected that the area will be open to .limited public use in 1993, although <br /> <br />facilities and wildlife developments will take several years to complete. The <br /> <br />acquisition has been supported actively by the. Grand Junction/Mesa County <br />Riverfront Commission, the colorado Oivision of Wildlife, and the u.s. Fish and <br />Wildlife Service. <br /> <br />Reclamation purchased approximately 128 of the 192 acres as wildlife land for ~. <br />the Grand Valley Salinity Control Unit to replace wildlife habitat that is lost \~ . <br />when canals and laterals are lined. Previously, approximately 1,300 acres of ~-' <br />mitigation lands were acquired under this unit and are managed by the Colorado l '~----- <br />Division of Wildlife as the Horsethief Canyon State Wildlife Area west of Fruita. ,_J <br />Reclamation will provide funds annually to the Colorado Division of Wildlife and <br />the Colorado State Parks for the operation and maintenance of these areas. <br /> <br />For additional information contact: Dick Fletcher, Colorado State Parks <br />Box B, Palisade, Colorado 81526, telephone (303) 464-0548 or Jone Wright, Bureau <br />of Reclamation, P.O.
