With the landowners
cooperation several .sites have already been installed and data is being
collected.

The monitoring data will help to measure what is heppening to the
irrigation water being applied to the fields. The soil moisture levels,
irrigation inflow, tail water and weather data are all measured to evaluate
whether the water applied is being used by the crop, lost to tail water runoff,
or passing through the soil profile below the plant roots.

The information gathered through this program will help the SCS to do a
better job in working with the landowners on water conservation measures. The
information can be used to help plan better irrigation systems and better water
management techniques. The monitoring data may also be useful in identifying
situations and potential areas for future irrigation improvements.

- Continued -

"'"',.
.t)t.

~~~;
,
The program has a few sites operational at this time. Additional sites
to represent more of the crops and soils will be added over the next several
months.
Frank Riggle, Soil Conservationist
Soil Conservation Service
. - _"""ment of Agriculture and Della M M t nd 0
.._n, ~""rallve Extension Service is dedicated t all'peopIeese, on rose a uray Counties Cooperating.
