CoIofado 81501 Monlro 242-4511 244-1834' 249-3 No. 5 ./ IRRIGA TlON MONITORING The llSDA Soil Conservation Service (SCS) as part .of it's Colorado River Basin Salinity Control program has begun an onfarm irrigation monitoring program in the Grand Valley. 8i tes have been selected across the valley to represent many of the soils and crops common to the area. With the landowners cooperation several .sites have already been installed and data is being collected. The monitoring data will help to measure what is heppening to the irrigation water being applied to the fields. The soil moisture levels, irrigation inflow, tail water and weather data are all measured to evaluate whether the water applied is being used by the crop, lost to tail water runoff, or passing through the soil profile below the plant roots. The information gathered through this program will help the SCS to do a better job in working with the landowners on water conservation measures. The information can be used to help plan better irrigation systems and better water management techniques. The monitoring data may also be useful in identifying situations and potential areas for future irrigation improvements. - Continued - "'"',. .t)t. ~~~; , The program has a few sites operational at this time.
