'0018~4

standards for this project have been agreed upon by Bureau of Recla-

mation, Kansas State University, and Kansas Water Resources Board

personnel.

Each county will be classified according to these land classifi-

cation standards for both gravity and sprinkler type irrigation.

Aerial contact prints with an approximate scale of 1" = 1667' will

be used in the field classification. The information will then be

transferred to'base maps traced from county transportation maps with

a scale of 1/2" = 1 mile. These in turn will be put on a state map

showing all the irrigable land available including both upland and
bottomland. The suggested priorities of classification are shown

on Exhibit A. At the conclusion of the land classification, field

work and laboratory analysis, a report will be written discussing

different aspects of land classification, including the potentialities
for expanding irrigation and the present and future problems that may

arise under sustained irrigation.

Because the determination uf irrigable lands is a highly spe-

cialized field in which most of the expertise is concentrated in

the Bureau of Reclamation, the primary responsibility for that work

is assigned to the Bureau. The upper 66 counties shown on Exhibit A

will be classified by Region 7, and the lower 39 counties by Region 5.

9
