The report was unfavorable to the survey <br /> <br />of the rivers in Las ft~imas County at federal expense. However, <br />the report was not published, and the Congress has not acted on <br /> <br />it. <br /> <br />A detailed report of the Purgatoire River was prepared py <br /> <br />the Corps of Engineers and submitted to the Congress as House <br />Document No. 387, 78th Congress, 2nd Session. In that report <br /> <br />the Chief of Engineers recommended improvement of the Purgatoire <br />River by levees and channel works for the protection of the City <br />of Trinidad, at an estimated cest to the Government of $909,000. <br /> <br />Local interests would be required to provide the rights-of-:way, <br />make the necessary che.nges in bridges and utili ties, and' main- <br /> <br />taio and operate all the works in accordance with reBulations <br /> <br />prescribed by the Secretary of War. The cost of the improvement <br />to local interests was estimated at $126,000, making a total <br />estj.mated project cost of $1,035,000. The project was authorized <br />by the Congress in Public IE.w No. 534, 78th Congress, 2nd Ses- <br />sion. In December, 1948, it was reported by the District Engi- <br />neer that a total of $30,000 had been alloted for planning the <br />authorized project, that an estimated $45,000 was required for <br />completing the planning, and that $1,971,240 was required for <br /> <br />" <br /> <br />construction. <br /> <br />-6- <br />
