C)
en
-.J
~

.

';, .

\ .
J

I '
t

I .

Sediment reduction in Caddoa Reservoir has been suggested

as a possible benefit that could be claimed for the Piedmont
,

Bridge Reservoir. While sediment reduction is not a nonreim-
bursable benefit at the present time, it may be authorized as a
benefit at some future date by the Congress. Because of this
possibility it is discussed briefly. The amount of sediment
reduction in Ce,ddoa Reservoir would not be equivalent to the
s'ildiment deposited in a reservoir at the Piedmont Bridge site.

Desilted water, when released from a reservoir, picks up another
sediment load, the amount being dependent upon the volume and
velocity of the water and the characteristics of the bed and
banks of the stream. While it is recognized that a reservoir at
the Piedmont Bridge site would prolong the useful life of Caddoa

Reservoir somewhat, the unknown quantities entering into the

problem preClude at this time an accurate determination of the

reduced sedimentation that could be claimed.

Arkansas River Compact

A study of the Arkansas River Compact was made to deter-
mine its effect upon the proposed project, and, as far as can

be determined, there is only one prOVision w11ich has a bearing

on the project. This is part D of Article IV which is quoted:

"D. This Compact is not intended to impede
or prevent future beneficial development of the
Arkansas River basin in Colorado and Kansas by
Federal or State agencies, by private enterprise,
or by combinations thereof, which may involve
construction of dams, reservoirs and other works
for the purpose of water utilization and control,
as well as the improved or prolonged functioning
of existing works: Provided, that the waters of
the Arkansas River, as defined in Article III,

-23 -
