In general, operations
were similar to those of the Coachella Valley except that the
distribution system is in open laterals and only the drainage
collection lines are piped. The salinity of drainage water is
similar to the Coachella Valley.

Mr. Tabor advised us that the loss in the All Ameri-
can Canal was 7% and that the loss in the Coachella Canal from
its takeout from the All American to the lined section (+ 60
miles) is 60%. . -

~~

1

,
,.

~

,.
~

,~,
.~,
?:
f~

After the Imperial Irrigation District inspection
we crossed into Mexico at Mexicali and looked over Mexican
irrigation operations. Several pumps were noted. We were
later advised by Mr. von SchMeler of the International Bound-
ary Commission, that most of these wells are ~ 300 feet deep
and that there are 400 in all in the area. In Mexico we travel-
led from Mexicali to San Luis at the Arizona-Mexico boundary.
Farming and irrigating practices in Mexico are extremely poor
and inefficient, by our standards. Practically the entire area
we saw was in cotton.

~
~
'.
ij:

~
~4
;~~

r:..
~~
.,;".'
~
lr'
~i
':"i

t:.

The Mexican section files release requirements with
the U. S. section each week. The release requirement is an
estimate for two weeks hence and a firm requirement for the
following week. Parker Dam is 72 hours from the border and
Davis 144 hours. It would appear that the Mexican demands
give adequate time for control.

After crossing back into Arizona on December 8th
we went to Imperial Dam to check the All American and Gila
Canal diversions and desilting works. No power is produced
at Imperial. The original reservoir capacity of 85,000 is
practically silted full. The reservoir, as far as we could
see, is overgrown with tules. The tule is a phreatophyte
and has an extremely high evapo-transpiration rate.

On December 9th we met Mr. von Schieler of the
International Boundary Commission who was extremely helpful.
He took us the entire length of the limitrophe section to
observe drainage and waste returns from the Yuma Project
and the Mexican pumping in that section. We checked the
Morelos Gagi~station near the old Hanlon Heading and then

~i
..

~,~
~i
~,~
;:'z~
,.;,;,.
::~
"""
~
'h
~
~
i1
f~
~; :..
"'~o

~<

'-..-~
'.::.;.:
~~:.
:<~~

:~'.

J
