Dear Governor Herschler:

On December 17, 1984 the Big Sarrly Conset-vation District invited personnel
from the Soil Conservation Service in Casper to rreet \,oith irrigated landowners of
the Eden Valley Irrigation Project at Farson to review and discu~s the SCS PI'eUm-
inary Evaluation report of an 'on-farm' Low Pressure Sprinkler Irrigation Proposal
as a rrethod of reducing salt-loading to the Color(1do River Systco frel~ that arC?a.

The SCS personnel were also asked to repcrt en the new Sc,lir.ity Control legis-
lation that was recently enacted into la\~.

In April of 1984 a questionnaire was sent to th~ irrigated landm;ners on the
Eden Project to determine if they would be interested in pursuing an 'on-farm'
rethcxl of reducing salt-loading of the Colorado River System I,lith 75 percent cost-
sharing for the installation of suitable irrigation systems. 'fho~e landowners
responding represented 62 percent of the irrigated l(1nd in the Eden Valley area
ard 68 percent of those respondents indicated they ','Quld definitely iIT;Jrove their
irrigation systems with the 75 percent cost-sharin:; for irrigation equip:nent in-
stallation.

Subsequent iOOividual contacts with landowners in that arC'a have sho\.1ll an
even greater interest than was determined by the questionnaire.

Although no poll of iOOividuals attending the D2CeT.ber 17th meeting was
taken, the general tone ard interest shown there has led the Big Sandy Conserva-
tion District Board of Supervisors to conclude that h'e should C()ntinu~ to e.'<plore
'on:fann' alternatives in reducing ,the salt pollution of the Colorado River from
the Eden Project. -",

We are asking you, Governor, to petition the SoL 1 Coaservation Service to
aggressively continue their studies of 'on farm' altcl~atLves to the salinity
, problem in that area.
