The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company

142 9 President's Report
To The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company

I
I.

TO THE DIRECTORS AND STOCKHOLDERS:
Water was nol relea!,t'd from .John Martin Reservoir on April 1st this
year because of early spring moisture, better than oJ inches in March
and about I 1/2 inches in April. Only 2..1.000 a.f. was available on April
1st. but on account of local moisture. water was not released immedi.
aiel...... StoraRe was more than doubled b~' May 7th when Colorado called
for water, and was up to 55.000 a.f \'then Kansas called more than a week
later. Over one mil/ion a.f. of water (1,007,000 a.r.) was available this
:'t'ear from the river fur irrigation and crop production in Colorado be-
tween Pue-blu and the Slate Line. 118.000 a.f. was measured at the Slate
Line. No large rtouds occlIrred and storage was moderate. and used mostl)'
iI. September.

Some trouble was experienced in planting crops at the proper time
on account of soil conditions, many instances being too wet.

The project (or control of flood water on the Wiley drain is still pend-
ing. Storage on the drainage area is not in favor, but work for control of
the erratic floods is still under study by the Soil Conservation Service.

Pueblo Dam should be nnished this fall and ready for winter storage of
direct now winter water if the water users so desire. A study of the effect
of this winter storage should be made to determine the effect on river now
oown slream. During 1973 season, ditches below Pueblo diverted generous
amounts of water for winter irrigation. For the 5 month winter period
river now at Pueblo was gaged at 79,900 a.r. District J4 ditches diverted
63,030 a.f. of which 10,000 or 12,000 a.r. was (or storage. Those in District
17 diverted 138,900 a.r. of which 52,080 a.f. was for storage to the Great
Plains. 10,250 a.f. was gaged at Las Animas and was stored in John Martin
Reservoir for down stream users in Colorado and Kansas. A study is being
made for the Conservancy District of the ecrect of storage of this water in
Pueblo.

A committee of water users has been selected by the Conservancy district
to try and develop some system of administration that would be satisfactory
for the winter storage. The Amity Mutual has been asked to participate in
developing a satisfactory plan.

Poce 3
