Introduction
to the
Proposed Plan

The Municipal and Industrial
System of the Bonneville Unit
is located in Salt Lake, Utah,
and Wasatch Counties. The sys-
tem will provide 90,000 acre-feet
of water annually for municipal
and industrial use in northern
Utah County and Salt Lake
County. and about 2.000 acre-
feet for municipal and industrial
use in Wasatch County. The
Project will also provide 14,100
acre-feet of water for supplemen-
tal irrigation use on 22,740
acres of presently irrigated land
in the Heber-Francis area of
Wasatch and Summit Counties,
generate hydroelectric power,
provide flood control. improve
recreation opportunities and
some esthetic values, and in-
clude measures to mitigate
fishery and wildlife losses.

The system plan includes con-
struction of J ordanelle Reser-
voir and Power Plant on the
Provo River; completion of
Alpine and Jordan Aqueducts
now under construction; and
stabilization of IS existing
upper Provo River reservoirs.
A IS-year construction period
is anticipated.

The existing Strawberry Reser-
voir will be the source of most
of the water supply, and this
supply will be exchanged
through Utah Lake to Jordan-
dIe Reservoir by picking up
the evaporation losses and
other recoveries of an estimated
105,000 acre-feet annually.

Project water for municipal
and industrial use will be re--
leased from Jordanelle Reser-
voir into the Provo River and
flow 20 miles dov.'nstream
where it \....ill be diverted at the
existing Olmsted Diversion Dam.
The released flows would be
conveyed to areas of use by
project aqueducts - the Alpine
Aqueduct t(l serve communities
in northern Utah County and
the Jordan Aqueduct to serve

the metropolitan Salt Lake
COUnty area.

Municipal and industrial water
delivered to Heber Valley will
be released from Jordanelle
Reservoir and exchanged for
water supplied from springs.
The irrigation water delivered
co the Heber and Francis areas
will be diverted from the river
into existing canals both up-
stream and downstream from
the reservoir, and storage water
will also be released down-
stream from the reservoir, and
storage water will also be re-
leased downstream to replace
those having rights (Q the river
natural flow.

A power plam will be con-
structed at the base of Jordan-
dIe Dam to generate electrical
energy from reservoir releases.
Power not required for the
Bonneville Unh will be avail-
able to existing power systems.

Several other project features
will be constructed at Jordan-
die Reservoir and fishermen's
access will be provided along
10 miles of the Provo River im-
mediately do\..'nstream. These
developments will accommodate
additional water-oriemed re--
creation on the reservoir.

Other project measures will be
included to develop the reser-
voir fishery to compensate for
losses of fish and wildlife
habitat.
