I
I
I
I
I
I,
I
I
I
I
,
I

?i

I
I
I
I
I
I
I

",j

3563

"

the Bureau of Reclamation. The 10-horsepower system nominally pumps 425 gallons per
minute from a depth of 38 feet. It consists of the following:

* Two 44-rnodule, two-axis photovoltaic tracking arrays capable of producing 225
volts, 30 amps (6750 watts)

* 500 gpn water pump and lQ-hp DC motor

* Well head vault

"
* Control console, uninterruptable power s1s~em (UPS) instrumentation and
safety equipment

* Lightning protection system.

\

Operation of the system is completely automatic. AC power is required and is
derived from the DC source for the array azimuth and elevation motor drives. The
water level control unit is also operated by low voltage DC. The UPS provides the
auxiliary power requirements and it is sized to accommodate all array functions
throughout a minimum of five days of inclement weather. Upon sun acquisition by the
arrays, the priority is to charge the battery system of the UPS to ensure that
backup po\oler is available.

Using a DC motor avoids the power losses ensuing frOID use of an inverter as would be
necessary in the case of an AC motor. The motor has a 4B-volt, battery-energized,
shunt winding that ensures rapid pump starting. This insures that the pump bearings
are not'subjected to any prolonged period without lubrication (water). The armature
of the motor operates directly from an array voltage_,n,____.. '

The pump is a vertical axis turbine with a single stage impeller manufactured by
Ingersoll-Rand. The pump has water lubricated bearings and a one-inch diameter line
shaft-;- The maximum diameter of the pump'is 9;5- inches at-the galvanized steel
strainer, which easily fits in the 12-inch,diameter well. _~--

,

The pump is prevented from operating at insolation levels less than 500 watts/square
- meter,=This 'insures that-,the adequate -headctand--fiow)-is-developed-toc-iubricate-the----
pump shaft bearings. The insolation level at which pumping is initiated is readily
adjustable if the water table or flow characteristics of the well change.

Another safequard built into the control system fA a time delay on the motor to
prevent it from being restarted immediately after a shut-down. This accommodates
the reverse turning of the motor due to backflow from the diSCharge piping.

A watertight concrete vault 9'8" x 12'2" x 7'4" contains the well-head pump and
rotor, switch gear, UPS, and control electronics. An anemometer mounted on top of
the vault provides stow and wake-up command for operations in windy weather. Two
44-module, point-focusing Fresnel concentrating arrays provide the power for water
pumping and all auxiliary loads. The sun tracking system optimizes daily energy
collection and provides a nominal 225 volts at 30 amps (6750 watts) as the standard
operating conditions of the site.

Operation and Maintenance

The project will be operated and maintained by Bureau of Reclamation personnel
although there are plans to contract maintenance with the Rio Grande Water
Conservation D1str1ct (R~~CD) 1n the future.
