The assessment provides the basis for
ranking of water quality problems within the Region. This
ranking has been subdivided in two parts: existing problems
and preserving existing high quality waters. Considering
existing water quality problems which need to be corrected
to meet the obiectives of the Clean Water Act throughout the
Region, the most serious water quality problems are
respectively in order presented:

o Acid mine drainage.

o

Nonpoint sources from high growth areas.

o

Point source
communities.

growth

discharges

from

high

o

Large area soil
activities.

from silviculture

disturbances

With regard to activities which have the greatest potential
to degrade the existing high quality of the Region's waters
or cause an exceedance of water quality criteria, the most
serious water quality problems are respectively in order
presented:

o

Hydrologic modifications produced by new municipal
and industrial water proiects.

o

Nonpoint sources from high growth areas.

o

Point source
cOll)munities.

growth

discharges

from

high

,I

.,.;--<-"--_":-,,-_.:._-..;,,.._-.,~~ ,~".o-.
