o

-c)--

c..)
..
N
<:n

;.>,.-

, ,-

, ,

PANAMA CITY HARBOR, FLORIDA. --The Board recommended that the existing

project for Panama City Harbor, Florida, be deepened to permit the accommodation

of larger, modern vessels.

The recommendations provide for deepening of the main entrance channel to

42 feet at the existing 450-foot width in the Gulf approach channel, and to 40

feet over the existing width of 300 feet across Lands End Peninsula to deep water

in St. Andrew Bay. Branch channels would be provided to a 38-foot depth, and

'....'

300-foot width, leading from the inner end of the main entrance channel west-

ward to the Port Authority terminal at Dyers Point and eastward to the Bay Harbor

'\>;f:-'

;'.)\:~:

.';

terminal. Turning and maneuvering areas comprising about 55 acres opposite

Dyers Point and 42 acres opposite Bay Harbor, both at 38-foot depths, would be

constructed. An anchorage area, 40 feet deep and containing about 177 acres,

would also be provided in St. Andrew Bay near the inner end of the main entrance

.<.~.~.: .'~

channel for LASH-type intermodal carriers and other vessels.

The modifications would cost $2,310,000 for construction, of which $104,000 is

the estimated cost to local interests. The benefit-cost ratio is 3.3.

The Board believed that the proposed placement of dredged material on the

-, '

'. . ~ :

beach in the vicinity of St. Andrews State Park in lieu of deposition in deep water

in the Gulf of Mexico, will help alleviate the erosion problem in that area, and

conserve a highly valuable natural resource.

00000
