,., ," .
40 lv~LiMETROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT

and eflluent lines, where a connection has been made to the upper
feeder both upstream and downstream from this junction, so that
the Orange County feeder can be utilized intermittently for de-
livery of unsoftened water for irrigation should a demand arise
for such service. From the turnout for a distance of 15 miles to a
regulating reservoir just northeast of the City of Brea the feeder
is designed as an unvalved flowline with a capacity of 57 cubic feet
per second. The delivery line from the regulating reservoir to the
cities of Fullerton, Anaheim, and Santa Ana is designed throughout
to withstand the pressure of water at reservoir high water level,
consequently this lower portion of the feeder requires no special
provisions for releasing water from the reservoir or for pressure
regulation. At each point of water delivery the member city in-
volved will install suitable equipment for regulating the rate of
diversion and reducing the pressure to meet its individual re-
quirements.
The Palos Verdes feeder with its system of laterals serves the
cities of Los Angeles, Compton, Torrance, and Long Beach. De-
signed capacity is 210 cubic feet per second from Eagle Rock to a
point near the Ascot reservoir of the Los Angeles city system,
whence the capacity is reduced in successive stages down to 60 cubic
feet per second into Palos Verdes reservoir at the southcrly ter-
minus of the feeder. The Santa Monica feeder, with capacity graded
from 125 cubic feet per second at its intake at the west portal of San
Rafael No.2 tunnel, to 30 cubic feet pel' second in its most westerly
portion, will supply the cities of Glendale, Burbank, Beverly Hills,
and Santa Monica, and can also make deliveries to the westerly
part of Los Angeles. Flow in these two lines is distributed from
the control tower in Eagle Rock Canyon near the terminus of the
upper feeder. Regulation of flow through the two feeders is in-
terrelated and depends both upon dispatching of water at the Lake
Mathews head works and upon the utilization of the Palos Verdes
reservoir.
The Santa Monica feeder is designed for operation at any flow
from maximum capacity to complete shut-off without the necessity
for manual dispatching of water at the Eagle Rock tower. Two
stages of pressure reduction a.re provided, one. at the north portal
of the Hollywood tunnel where automatic pressure-break valves
discharge into the tunnel, and the other at the Beverly Hills de-
livery station, where automatic pressure-reducing valves relieve
the line of pressure in excess of that needed for conveying to its

1
~.

I
I
I
~

,

..

..
