The LGCU is characterized by a dominance of irrigated
cropland, pastureland and hayland, interspersed with
native rangeland on mesas, high terraces and old alluvial
deposits. Elevation ranges from 4,500 to 7,000 feet,
with average annual precipitation ranging from less than
8 inches to over 1.2 inches. A diversity of small grain,
fruit, vegetables and forage crops are produced on
irrigated fields. Range sites include salt flats, and
clayey, silty and loamy saltdeserts.

4. Objectives

The M&E plan for this unit identifies the objectives as
follows: 1.) to assess effectiveness of USDA project
action for reducing the salt load carried by the
uncompahgre and Gunnison Rivers into the Colorado River,
2) to assess impacts of project action on wetlands and
other wildlife habitat values and assess the
effectiveness of voluntary action by landowners to
replace incidental fish and wildlife values foregone, 3)
and to assess local economic aspects of project .
