SUMMARY SHEETS

Paonia Project

LOCATION: West-central Colorado on the North Fork of the Gunnison
River and its tributaries.

~UTHOnIZED: Authorized and partially constructed under Act of June 25,
1947 (61 Stat. 181). Reauthorized as a participating proj-
ect ,;ith the Colorado River Storage project by the Act of
Aprilll, 1956 (70 Stat. 105).

PLAN

Construction of the Paonia Reservoir on Muddy Creek, a tributary of
the North Fork of the Gunnison River, will regulate runoff for irri-
gation of lands under the Fire Mountain Canal which diverts from the
river. These lands are located in the Fire Mountain division of the
project. Enlargement and extension of the Fire Mountain Canal are
part of the project development. Some water from Leroux Creek,
including importations to the creek heretofore used on lands under
the Fire Mountain Canal and its extension, will by exchange be
transferred to lands above the canal in the project's Leroux Creek
division. Land drains will be provided as needed. No new irriga-
tion laterals will be provided by the project. Improvement of exist-
ing small reservoirs on the headwaters of Leroux Creek will be accom-
plished independently by the water users. Nominal recreational
facilities will be provided at the Paonia Reservoir. In addition to
irrigation the project will provide benefits to fish and wildlife,
recreation, and flood control. Repayment will be completed in 68
years. Reimbursable costs that are beyond the repayment ability of
the irrigators will be paid from the Upper Colorado River Basin Fund.

COSTS

Y$7,813,000

Paonia Dam and Reservoir. . . . . $5,701,000
Fire Mountain Canal enlargement,
extension, and diversion dam. . 1,995,900
Land drains . . . . . . . . . . .
