PROGRAHS

Program Titl~: G~me Wildlife Program

Target Public:~hThe primary clients are resident and non-resident
license buyers ,.:and children who engage in hunting. and fishing
activities. However, all Colorado residents and visitors to this
state are potential clients. A recent survey indicated that 44%
of Colorado residents are occasional anglers and 17% are occasional
clients for hunting. During calendar 1977, 942,556 licenses were
issued to resident and non-resident sportsmen--il1ustrating their
willingness to participate and financially support the Game Wildlife
Program. In addition over 350,000 children (non-licensed) are active
participants.

Purpose: The purpose of the Came Wildlife Program is to provide
today's sportsmen and future generations the best possible hunting
and fishing experience. In so L./ing the Division will strive to
maintain populations of all wildlife (mammals, birds, fish, and
related groups) possessing sport hunting and fishing qualities. Long
range objectives have been established for major species groups.
These objectives relate to wildlife populations, wildlif~ habitat,
wildlife harvest, and recreation opportunity (days). Objectives and
current status of harvest and recreation is as follows:

Harvest

Recreation Days

1983
Objective

Current
Status

1983
Objective

Current
Status

Big Game
Sma 11 Game
Fish

125,000
1,800,000
23,000,000

90,000
1,500,000
15,250,000

1,600,000
2,000,000
11 ,000,000

1,125,000
1,500,000
8,000,000

Program Title: Nongame Wildlife Program

Target Public: All Colorado residents and visitors to this state
are potential clients of the Nongame Wildlife Program. In a recent
wildlife use survey 64% of Colorado residents indicated they were
at least observers of wildlife.

About 90,000 persons indicated their willingness to support the
nong~me wildlife program through personal contributions on the
illCOm0.2 lelX Cllcck 0[[ during 1977. Children are, of course, clients
of the nongame program.

Purpose: The purpose of the progr:1m is to perpetuate all non-game
wildlife in Colorado as members of the ecosystems. Recovery of
l\lrc~tcllcJ ~\nJ cnJ~ngcrcJ nun-game wildlife and development of natural
areas where people might observe and otherwise enjoy nongame wildlife
are important phases of the program.

25
